Mal grew up in the Western Suburbs of Chicago and currently resides in Albany Park. They started their educational career at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2010 as a Theatre Studies major. Mal graduated in August 2018 from Northeastern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. While working as a Writing Fellow at the University’s Center for Academic Writing, Mal learned what it meant to advocate for the success of their students.
Advocacy is a value that Mal cherishes and Y.O.U. is the perfect place to cultivate that value. Youth are our future and being able to be a positive, supportive, influential role model is Mal’s goal while serving with Y.O.U. As bell hooks said, “If we give our children sound self-love, they will be able to deal with whatever life puts before them.”
Mal enjoys participating in community organizing that challenges our oppressors to dismantle the systems those oppressors put in place. Mal would not be the person they are today without the support, love, validation, and affirmation from their chosen family.
